If you plan on using 4GB or more of memory you will want to use a 64 bit system.  If you want to play any of the new games these days they request a min of 4GB but I think it works best with 8GB.  Mr-T is on the money, you will be MUCH happier with Windows 7(Vista Fixed).

Just my 2 cents

There should be at least 2 memory slots. All you have to do is take out the 1GB stick and replace it with a 2 , 4 or 8 GB. If you can afford it, get 2 of the same memory. 2x2gb, 2x4gb, etc.

What type of machine are you using, and does it use DDR2 or DDR3 memory.

www.crucial.com , scan my machine will give you answers and recommendations.

A really Neat little program that I use all the time to find out what all is in any computer I am reparing ... Speccy from Piriform. It is completely safe and free to download. Find it here Speccy It will tell you everything you need to know about a computer no matter how old or who built it. A great tool. 8)

By using that program you can find out exactly what memory size and brand is in your computer and you can use that information to find compatable replacement memory that will work with no problems the first time.

Since you are running 32 bit now it will not read over 3.2 Gb nor would it make use of more than that. Therefore get the windows 7, 64 bit home premium first. then you can add ram as desired.
I agree with mr.T on the os! I do not like the alpha or beta of windows 8 so no need to worry about it coming out. The ram I would go with highest frequency the motherboard can do, i.e. 8500 which is 800 MHz or the 1066 speed if your mb can take it. I run 8 gbs on many of my pcs and feel any higher would be overkill, but some motherboards can take up to 32 gbs (or perhaps even more).
