I just got off the phone with technical support, so you know I have a problem if I'm coming here! (They said consult local tech!!!)

I bought 2x2Gb memory sticks for my computer (DDR2 pc2-6400) , as recommended from Crucial scan, an installed them into my pooter.

Which then decided not to boot.

Tried uninstalling, then re-installing the chips, but to no avail.

Thinking I had a bad stick, I put in the first one in the first open slot, computer booted, 6GB showing on Computer Properties! yay!
Did the same thing with the other stick.... same result! (hmmmmz)

Maybe I have a bad slot? Do the same thing again. Put one at a time into slot 2, each time computer reboots, shows 6Gb. (computer is having nervous breakdown by now, 8 restarts in an hour)

Last time, tried 2 new sticks in 2 expansion slots, no joy.

So.... will now try the 2 new sticks in the OLD slots, see what happens. If anyone has a suggestion on what is happening, it would be greatly appreciated.

What is the max supported amount of the motherboard?

Even with suggested RAM from motherboard companies it can still be hit and miss.  For example, in the rig I just built, I can't find a stable setting over 1600 no matter what I try, even though the ram is rated at 1866.  In fact the motherboard kept defaulting it to 800, which was not acceptable.   I should also ask, are you running AMD or Intel?

I've had tiny bits of dust make their way into DIMM slot and muss up RAM detection. It''d suggest a quick blast of air. Failing that:


Use Memtest86 to test your sticks. The best program for testing for a bad memory stick.

Go to Free Download section, and get the version best for you. Burn it or put it on a USB drive, then go into your BIOS and set that media to your first boot device. Upon reboot, it shoudl start audomatically. When the program starts, it will run all memory tests on its' own. It takes anywherer from 30 minutes to 2 hours.

If the results show an error, then put that stick in another slot. If you get no error, then it's the slot. If you DO get another error, replace that stick.

Though I have 4 slots - my mobo will only support 3 of them; perhaps you have something similar.

I'm with Tet on this one.  It sounds like your system will only support up to 6 Gb of memory.  I would suggest looking into flashing your BIOS.  There may be a newer one out that will support more than 6 Gb.
