so times here are a little hard cash wise but I have been offered this setup as a gift from family for doing well in my classes and I just wanted input from some of you to see if this is a suitable pc for gaming for the time being until I can afford a monster gaming machine.

Sounds like a killer setup,remember you can over clock the cpu easily. Put a h-50 on the cpu and your set also add 1600mhz ram and it will help with overclocking and I think it should be tri channel. With a few things here and there, you can make this mechine rip.  Would be a hole lot cheeper A  Laughing

I'd suggest a Sandy Bridge (LGA 1155) setup, if you're to go the Intel route. The 2500k is cheaper, faster, cooler, uses less power, and is super easy to OC.

At least 1600mhz RAM, 8gb is plenty.

Beefier GPU, if possible.  the 6770 is a little weak compared to the rest, and would certainly be a bottleneck. But the difference from getting a 2500k CPU should give enough headroom. a 6870 at least. And maybe another later on, as they scale very well in Crossfire.

Is that a pre-built?

Surely you jest! The CPU was Intel's high-end chip before the Sandy bridge mobo.
I agree that if you can spring for the newer board then you have a bit more headroom.

I am green with envy as I'm at least two generations behind.

Yes it is a pre built the ram is easily updated as far as the gpu it comes with the hd 6770 which is  the slowest thing on there but got to be much better then my phenom 2 quad core ddr2 ram at 800 mhz with a gts 450that I'm using now also keep in mind its a gift. This wont be the last machine I buy for sure and it allows me some flexibility on other things (ssd hd ect.)

Turn your current PC into a HTPC. Slap XBMC on it and connect it to your network and TV. That rig will run 1080p videos (and Blu-Rays) smoothly. Or, sell it and the 6770 and buy a better card.

Though I stand by my statement that a 2500k is better bang/buck.

tI should work really nice.

That mother board will give you a lot room for upgrades.

You could add another 6770 that should keep you rocking for along time.

But will still have to work on your game play LOL

It's strange that it says 4 DIMMs on a tri-channel platform, it's optimized for 3 or 6.

I have the same platform, but the i7 920. I have 6GB (3 x 2GB) DDR3 1600mhz 7-8-7-20 and I daresay it's the fastest component I have.

As a 3 year old platform it is still pretty good. It is Intel's previous enthusiast platform (the new one that just came out, LGA2011/X58 supersedes it).

The way to make it shine is with the triple channel memory controllers, the mainstream are only dual. Fast low latency memory in sets of 3 (That Intel board can support up to 16GB).

Or just get a 6850 for a few dollars more and really rock and roll, But Personally if I'm using Intel I would use nvidia, but you could save allot more if you built an amd fx8150 system, Oh and dont sell the 6770 short, I only run a 955 quad with ddr2, and a 5770hd and still cruise at an average 50fps on bf3

Excellent rig!  All you would have to really do to get any good performance out of it would be to upgrade from a AMD 6770 to a 6950/6970.

Heck when I get my 7990 I will sell you my 6950 arctic cooled card
