I used to be able to network my XP machine with my Windows 7. I had to put in a new HDD in the XP one and I can't for the life of me, get it to network. I remember at one time, I had to change a few things and it worked. While I was on my Win7, I would just go to Networks, and See "Al-Dell" there and all I would have to do is Copy and paste anything into a folder on my Windows 7 comp,  and it was there on my XP. I keep getting a Network logon with password needed now...what am I doing wrong?

I have both in a WORKGROUP.

I can see my other Win 7 Laptop from my Win 7 Desktop but not the XP one at all..

If you're getting a request for  Logon information, then enabling Simple File sharing should turn it off. It's been a while since I used XP and I can't really recall how to do that, though. On my home network, I use tight security on my router, and relatively loose security on my LAN.

You can also give access permissions to Everyone, which should also disable login info requests.

For SMB Sharing, the usernames and passwords need to match exactly.  If you desire, you can also grant Anonymous permissions to the NTFS folder and Share permissions.  I personally prefer the matching usernames and passwords as it is more secure.

I only want to use this to transfer files and stuff from one computer to the other. I don't need any security...it's only my Admin computer, which is 2 feet to my left...lol....

I'll figure it out...Actually, I used to go on my Win7 computer and go to Networks and there was my XP machine with any folder/file I wanted to see. I used to copy something from my Win7 computer and paste it into my XP and do what ever I needed to on the XP machine....but I think, now I just have to create a shortcut for my Public folder on my Win7 desktop and it's the basically the same...

Ah good! _b

Well hopefully you'll remember most of it for next time. If you find yourself sending lots of stuff to that drive, it's super easy to add destinations to your "Send To..." list.
