Microsoft might want all users of Windows 8 to use its new tiled interface, but if you really don't like it, or it's the one thing that's preventing you from switching to the new OS full time, there's a clever hack which will disable it for good -- or until you want to switch back, at least.

I haven't tested this as I feel the best way to work around the new Windows 8 UI is to not upgrade at all.

With it still being offered at $38 is it worth it to upgrade from win 7?

Microsoft should give the option to shut this off in the first place.  It is really designed for a tablet, not a PC.  Esp. a PC that does not have a touch screen monitor.

**BEWARE OF THIS SOFTWARE** I believe it contains a mail worm.

In the Betas there was the option to disable the Metro screen and use the traditional start menu, but they eliminated this awhile ago.

I was able to get rid of the trojan, Im not 100% sure this file is where I got it from.

Once I cleaned my system, I was able to use the program to get the start menu back with no problems.

You do have to make sure you have a W7 OEM disc for this to work, but the full start menu is there now.

Nice find.

My computer did a full crash and burn after I installed Windows 8 for the second time (first time didn't take well, plus the problem wit it erasing EVERYTHING on my computer)

So I'm sticking with Win7 until I hear angels dancing on the head of a pin singing the praises of Steve Jobs and Bill Gates.

I work R&D as many of you know.

One of my side projects is I took one of our post popular systems, loaded windows 7 ran 3DMark and ViewPerf 11 benchmarks.  Then with the same system loaded Windows 8 and ran the same tests.

My results shows that Windows 8s performance is 12% lower then Windows 7.

I know there are some forums that swear to a better performance with Win 8, but with what Ive seen its not there.

Ive talked to Microsoft and they say, "We are working out the issues that are being seen"

So I wouldnt hold your breath waiting for those angels to dance.

Windows 7 speed up over time with patches. I expect to see the same with 8 but I'm sticking with 7 for now.

I'm sticking with Win7 myself also...I do have it on a 10 yr old Dell, on one of the partitions...I hate the fact that you have to click through about 5 screens just to turn off or restart my system...I am going to look into thei Hack if you will and try it...

On a positive note...it made my whole home network with every device EASY-PEASY...I didn't have to do a thing...it saw everything...

I like it...but on my gaming rig, I'm sticking with Win7....
