There will be no dedicated servers in MW2. At this time we will reevaluate how we will support MW2. We are still very dedicated to supporting W@W and would love to have a MW2 server if at all possible.

More info to come.

Some of you may have read about the rumours surrounding whether dedicated server support will be available in the upcoming CoD:MW2.

Read Here:

http://bashandslash.com/index.php?op...739&Itemid=111

This afternoon, during a live BASH episode, who should turn up but Infinity Wards community manager: 402.

A number of questions were put forward, including the dedi server question. Rob "fourzerotwo" Bowling replied:

Quote

no - dedi servers will not be available. Multiplayer will run through a "IWNet" and servers will not be available for purchase. Listen servers only.

Furthermore, Bowling also confirmed that PunkBuster will not be supported, alternatively using the Valve Anti-Cheat (or VAC) system.

BASH is still live with 402 - listen live here!:
http://bashandslash.com/index.php?op...d=91&Itemid=76

I will update as news becomes available.

UPDATE:

402 says on BashandSlash that, as of right now, there are NO plans for mod tools, as the current setup with IWNet doesnt support mods.

No delay on PC for Modern Warfare 2. You'll also have Prestige Mode in PC as well as lots of Steam support. Hopefully min specs will be soonabout 9 hours ago from Tweetie from fourzerotwo's twitter

Rob Bowling, community manager (Gamer / Geek / Creative Strategist at Infinity Ward...as he says on his Twitter page) at Infinity Ward was kind enough to join our panel on BASH today. He let us in on the news that IW was taking Modern Warfare in a new direction. The online game on PC has changed. Dedicated servers are out. IW.net is in.

This is a game changer and many of you may not be too happy. I for one will be willing to listen and try it out. It’s all I can do.

For the folks in our community that mod and map, the future does not look as bright as the past.

I'm seeing the same reports. We still are hearing from the game server hosts that they will be offering servers but still no info yet. If this is the truth we will have to reevaluate what we do with MW2. We will still offer some kind of support but not sure what it will look like at this time.

From IW forums

Black Saturday 10/17/09 - No Dedicated Servers and Mod Tools Announced

See http://bashandslash.com/

The news today put a stake thru the heart of most PC gamers and most feel its the end of the community and competition aspect of PC gaming we all came to love especially with the COD series. This could be end of the leagues like CEVO, TWL etc.., the end of gaming server companies like GameServers and the end of the clan community as we know it.

Let us show IW and Activision they are making a big mistake and they are letting many PC sales worldwide go to waste by not supporting dedicated servers and mod tools. Many innovations in this game came from PC mods done by PST Joker and other modders. Things like the C130 cannon and many other innovations. Many great games like CounterStrike itself has come from modders. Also custom maps and mods like 402's favorite Star Was mod came from the modding community. Its a shame that IW and Activision has forgotten where its roots came from. The PC community has supported the game greatly since the first version. There are still many players that play the previous versions. Console gamers should appreciate the things we have forced on the game: Larger maps, stats and more than 4 player maps came about so consoles could offer as much as PC versions of games. A lot of 360 gamers wanted dedicated servers for 360. Instead of pushing the console side to its limits they have decided to dumb down the PC version and not offer the many features we have had for years in FPS games. This is not progress or an improvement! This is a giant leap backwards!!!

Please sign this thread to let IW and Activision know that you as a consumer support the PC version and that they are losing the opportunity to make even more sales by not supporting mod tools and dedicated servers and release a better product. At the very least they can patch it into the game after release. Much like Treyarch put in COD TV, additional maps and other DLC afterward we would hope that Activision/Infinity Ward would realize the benefits of supporting and expanding the PC version to the fullest. It will only make the game better for everyone and eventually the console community can get mods and broadcasting eventually also and other benefits innovated with the PC first.

Let us let IW know that we want these things in the game in order for it to be a truly complete game and not an unfinished product.

I will be updating and putting a total number of signatures daily. Lets keep this going so they have to listen.

I saw that they turned off the ability for people to join their forums. That is a shameful cheep move... A move like this can push the hard core players away form COD for ever.

hmm I am going to go out on a limb here.  they won't allowed dedicated servers right now.  I bet what they might do in the future is have dedicated servers and then charge a huge preimium and shut down the other secondary server host.  Thats just an assumtion

Please sing the petitions and post on their forums if you have already registered. We need to stop actions like this or there will be no need for teams like *BK*. With out dedicated servers there will be no privet admining of our servers like we do. There will also be no privet matches like we did today let your voice be heard.

You know why their doing this?

I tell you why, they are a bunch of money wanting douche bags, and by making this game only playable through steam, they can make it so you have to buy all the DLC separate, and shell out more money.

They built this community through the dedicated servers they offered, allowing us to alter the game through custom map making and mods, giving the gamers the tools to produce quality work, now they want to throw it all away? For what? Too make a few bucks...

You know what....the can go screw someone else over, I'm not having it, as of tomorrow, I'm canceling my pre-order at gamestop and getting my 70 bucks back, Im sure as hell not paying to be controlled like everyone who plays consol, eff that.

I really hope they see the impact this will create and smarten up, but I think its too late now, they would have to have serious delay and we all know how IW is when it comes to money...

The sad thing is, theres not enough of the hardcore/modding community to give a damn, they will have the best selling game to date, damn fascists pigs

/end rant

Yay for not preordering... can't they see what is happening to Dragon Rising? Great gameplay, but terrible multiplayer. And it's a lot to do with no dedicated servers. If they want to go that way and ruin a franchise then oh well... guess we have to look forward to Borderlands more right, Mojo?

Removal of the dedi server support can only be the result of some sort of back door deal forcing players to pay for extra maps, etc.  There is no overhead for them if BK runs a dedicated server as we have to put up the server and time to maintain it.  Only money can be the driver for this and I'm voting with mine.  I have already cancelled my preorder with Amazon.

I agree Easy, they were probably saying

"How can we make more money?"

"Hmm, we could charge the PC players for the DLC like we do with players on Xbox live and PSN."

"But then we would have to create a network to hold all the dedicated servers, and that would be an expensive route Activision wouldn't be in favor of."

"Well matchmaking works well with the consols  and it would even the playing field with all three of the main systems"

"Yea, a have a buddy of mine up at Steam, I'll give him a shout, he'll probably give us a great deal."

"PC players are going to love this!"

Yeah, Strand. Right now there are no dedicated servers. But that is about to change with the new patch for Dragon Rising. So keep your money handy. They are really trying to listen to the gamers and are adding a ton of things the gamers are suggesting. Hopefully that includes dedicated servers. This is for Dragon Rising....not MW2..

I signed the petition...35,614 or something like that. At that number, if everyone refuses to buy and cancels their pre-orders, it's a potential loss of $1,680,700.00. That's right One Million, Six Hundred Eighty Thousand, Seven Hundred dollars to Infinity Ward, and IWNet. Not to mention the production costs of all the pre-orders and general sales.

This information leaking out so close to release date shows you their true nature. The fact of the matter is we do not have as much power as we think...1 and 3/4 Mil is a drop in the bucket when Microsoft is trying to capture the gaming market. It couldn't really work out better for Microsoft if the PC gaming market was totally cut out...imagine their glee...boosted console sales...pay per download contents...its a win win for Microsoft who has billions to back a hostile push-out of the PC gaming market.

Footnote:
With the Microsoft OS NOT supporting gaming in-general, does this really come as a surprise to you?

Well...I don't really think they care if PC buys it or not...it's not their agenda. Their agenda seems to be console and make the PC mimic the console as to cut down on costs,  prioritize profits and be a pawn to Microsoft's agenda. Their lack of details and PC requirements at such a close date of release makes me suspect. I did not pre order, so I am good not to buy it.

I won't be buying the game because there will be no "community" for it. As it stands now, it's "play our way or NO way"!
I choose NO WAY.

I remember the early days of Americas Army...you played on their servers only or, you started one on your own computer and invited your friends.

Yea I wont be purchasing until they have dedicated servers whats the point!?   If I wanted a dumbed down console game I would buy a console (waste of money) its bad enough they adopted designing for console THEN port console to PC with retarded control options or total lack thereof.  I might take another look at Flashpoint if they follow thru with the dedicated server patch in the meantime its going to be a Borderlands marathon.

The only reason most ppl play PC IMHO is because they have the option of playing where they want in a comfortable moderated environment ...I dont care if someone is better than me I just want to play with people having fun. And random matchups never lead to  playing equals. . . . . . just morons!

I have never played ANY multiplayer game more than a few weeks if the dedicated server option wasnt available for me to find like minded players and NOT just random morons PERIOD!

Infinity Ward has allowed the petition post back in the forums with 97,481 sigs.  If these people will not buy based on no dedicated server and mod tools it would be a 5,848,860 loss to infinity ward.  Yet I am sure some have signed more than once.  There is a note in the forum that this info has been sent to the IT department.  Yet un-confirmed.

Anyway check it out, it's interesting enough with quotes like "I'd played all the previous COD games on PC as well, and I really enjoyed them, but the MW single-player campaign on 360 was honestly perhaps the best 10 hours of gaming I've ever had."  Time will tell if reviewers will push the console over PC or rave how the new match system is wonderful after all of the PC guys made such a stink.
