I'm building a new system this summer for college. I want to put my operating system and my game files on a solid state to speed load times up. I'm just not sure which one is the fastest and best deal. I'm also not sure about which drives have TRIM support. heres what i'm looking at. Any help would be great.

I'm leaning towards the intel

Intel is the slowest of all the ones you have chosen. Basically the first 2 are identical except the $199 one has a faster random write speed which is good. It has 50k compares to 10k so its a pretty substantial difference.

Is there a specific reason your buying SSD's? Keep in mind the price in ssd's are a lot more than normal hd's. Most people use SSD for the OS and other IMPORTANT programs and use a secondary drive to install programs/music/data/etc on.

I only plan on loading my OS and my immediate games that i use a lot on the ssd. I really hate long load times for game files.  I plan on throwing everything else on a 1 or 2 terabyte drive. So i really only need at least 50 or 60 gbs for the ssd.

What are the best ssd drives for the buck? What brands?

Here's the setup i have for the computer so far.

Intel i7 930 2.8 gHz
ASUS P6X58D-E ATX Intel motherboard
Hitachi deskstar 2 TB (storage drive)
Intel x-25 M 80 gb ssd (OS and game files)
EVGA GeForce GTX 470
6 GB Corsair DDR3 1600
Samsung Bluray Drive

A little off the ssd subject but, have you already got the storage drives?  If not I would go for a either the 2tb you have or a 1tb but get two of them and raid 0 them IMO.  You wont have fault tolerance but it will speed things up and it would double your storage space.

but with the stuff you've chosen i might of gone a little bit different of a route.

The difference between the 920 and the 930 is very minimal to say the least. Id just go with the 920 seen how the only difference between the 920 and 930 is a multiplier difference of 1. Go ahead and get a corsair H50 for your cooler and overclock that puppy to 4.0 with ease Smile ( that is if you get the D0 batch which its almost IMPOSSIBLE to get the C0's now )

The mobo is pretty decent

As with what Ufans said get the 2xTB drives just make sure there at LEAST 7200rpm if not faster, anything slower than that and you'll see a performance decrease. With that much space you dont want to have slow read times. Then put them in raid ( remember you have to do that b4 you install windows )

Get the SSD i said b4, the Intel is a lot slower than the ocz's

When it comes to video cards im going to have to say go ATI; Atm they are the leader and out perform the 400series by nvidia.


Newegg 5870's for the same price as 470's

Yeah I thought about raiding them, but I've heard its a pain. Besides this is my first build.

Thanks for all the advice. What setup would you guys recommend?

CPU--I was able to find the i7 930 on sale new in box for 199.99 at microcenter, thats why i picked it over the 920
Motherboard--I would like to have usb 3.0 capability on my motherboard. I realize i could just get a pci card, but if its on the board when i build it, then i don't have to worry about it.
Graphics Card--For the graphics card, i'm split between the nvidia 470 gtx and the radeon 5850. I don't want to spend over 350 on the card, because i'd rather just upgrade the card in 2 or 3 years.
harddrive--. My initial plan was to do a ssd for the main drive, and a large storage drive. I might raid the storage drive if its really as easy as you guys say it is. I still want the ssd, but i might wait 6 months to buy one, so that prices will drop.
RAM--I think 6 GB of ram is more then enough. What brands do you guys recommend?

Also, i've never overclocked before, and the idea of overclocking is a little intimidating, any advice?

hah well if you need some advice heres a link to overclocking the i7 to 4.0 with EASE . With my motherboard, by leaving the voltages at auto it works fine Smile i did notice anything past that needed some modification.

Make SURE you dont buy a cheap Psu Razz You'll thank me in the long run.
