Ok one of my hard drives on my desk top went out. Half of it is gone and the other half of the partition looks like its about to go. I didn't really lose any data I just need a new hard drive. Now can I just buy any internal hard drive or do I need to buy a particular type? I'm not exactly the best when it comes to this kind of thing.

Any feed back will be very helpful.

How old is your computer? Most computers now a days use Sata Hard Drives and their relatively cheap, you can get a 250 gig one for about 60-70$, I would store all the valuable stuff asap a couple of disks, once they start to go they go pretty quick.

But yea your best bet is to get a Sata HDD, unless your computer is ancient, you can tell if you have a sata hdd by opening up your case, check the connections coming from the power supply, sata connections are thin and sleek, while the IDE/ 4 pin molar connections are big and bulky and have to be plugged into an 4 prong output.

The computer is about 5 years old or so. I got it when the Nvidia 6800 was the best video card out there. I'll look at it latter tonight o see if it is SATA.

This is the difference, if it looks like the bottom one you need a Sata Hard Drive, if it looks like the top you need an IDE Hard Drive.

for a new Drive, check out newegg.com  I got my whole computer from them, built by parts and assembled myself.  they have a wide variety of drives.  Personally, I would recommend something from Seagate or Western Digital, they are the two best companies in the business, IMHO.

Dont know if this matters but if you dont want to wait for shipping and what not, I got my Seagate Barracuda1TB SATA Hdd from bestbuy under $100. I think it was like 93 and some change. It was on sale but this was like 2 weeks ago.

Did you lose any data?
Had that happen to me a wile ago. 2 partitions on a single drive. Lost the mfd or fat table, something like that. Almost lost everything. I bought a nice little recovery program that was able to get most everything back off. If you need to recover anything, let me know. I can pick up the drive and see what I can do.

I have a IDE drive but my mother board can work with a SATA drive. Which one should I get?

if you set your computer up correctly you should get a sata 2 if your mobo can take it other wise just a sata they are faster than ide

Yes i would recommend newegg to anyone needing computer parts. They have great selection, great prices and great customer service. Also i would go with sata or sata2 like mr t said and try to get away from ide if possible.
