Attend the Boot Camps. I came from having not played any of the Battlefield games so the learning curve for me was pretty steep. Maybe hop into the Boot Camp server and muck about, or search for "Practice" in your server browser. there are fair number of Practice Servers out there. Mostly for air combat, but I'm sure you'd be safe for getting some range time in and fiddling with all the goodies.

I'm not a big fan of using a browser, either. It gives a ton of info and works well enough for what it is, but it's just one more thing added to the pile of things that go wrong and lead to errors of one kind or another. Make sure your browser plugin is up-to-date. If it isn't, a little yellow down-arrow will appear at the top edge of the Browser page, to the right of the centre. Battlelog seems to work best with Firefox and ugh.. Internet Explorer.

Oh, you may want to ahve a look at teh "Bettter Battlelog" plugin. It adds a LOT more information and tweaks to Battlelog, and far as I know, is officially sanctioned.
