I bought the game as a download from origin, can someone help me break free of using the origin client? I can't seem to find the polite and friendly server on there.

You have to use the origin client. It needs to be running for most games bought through it the same way steam does. The bf3 "server browser" is done entirely through a web interface. Luke got you pointed in the right direction but you can do more on battle log. Like check your stats and see the feeds from your friends list.
