a friend of mine had a zalman cnps9900 cpu cooler (fan) now this never been used but is a few years old (2009), and states that is is compatible with intel i7, core 2 quad, duo cpus and amd socket am2+, am2, am3

but my question is:-
is it compatible with am3+ as i believe it came out before am3+ did. i had a quick google and somebody states am3 and am3+ are exactly the same when it comes to coolers the difference is in the connections. is this true or not.

Yes, it'll fit.  AMD Cooler fittings have barely changed over teh years. I think even my S754 would still be able to use it.
