My first day at E3 was a mental and physical test. Besides the free energy drinks, the only thing that kept me going off two hours of sleep was the prospect of playing some of the most anticipated titles of 2011 and beyond. During my wandering and line waiting, I was able to get some hands-on time with two marquee titles that will be in direct competition with each other: Battlefield 3 and Modern Warfare 3. Not to my surprise, both titles are fundamentally the same as the titles that preceded them.

Even though Modern Warfare 3 is giving gamers a new mode to toy with, it seems that is all Infinity Ward has given to us. It feels hollow, as though the series has hit a wall creatively, forcing many elements in the process. Rather than create something new or improve something that already works, Infinity Ward  is seemingly content to push out what they know. That’s safe. In comparison Battlefield 3 feels like it has enough in it to return to return the franchise back to being the king of first-person shooters.

I've been picking up info on BF3 here and there since I heard it was announced.  I've seen some DICE interviews, the website videos, and the recent E3 coverage on G4TV.  I've yet to see anything that indicates I would not enjoy this game.  Unlike the Bad Company titles, they are keeping the prone stance in this game (like previous BattleField titles).  DICE has been pushing the FPS genre, in my opinion, instead of remaining a stagnant pond of copy & paste (Is it just me or does Black Ops look like new maps with World At War graphics/themes?).

MW3 has dual sights, which is something I've wanted in a FPS for awhile.  They also touted a game version of the XM25, which might be cool.  However, I've seen the footage from E3 and am not impressed at all.  In fact, every single FPS game (excluding BF3) looked like garbage to me.  Too many people using dated console graphics for blocky soldiers and rigid movements.

However, BF3 takes the cake.  The body motion tech, from FIFA studio, was implemented and looks great to me.  The environment graphics are even better than BF:BC2.  The scope of destructable terrain looks to be increased.  The infantry aspect looks better, though it will be impossible to tell without actually playing it.  I was very disappointed with the lack of customizable kits in BF:BC2 and the seemingly unrealistic gunplay of holding an AR to someone's chest from 1-2 ft away and missing while they knife or pistol you when your clip is empty.  It was far more efficient to run around with the grenade launcher and resupply yourself as Assault.  That's just my personal gripe.

I pre-ordered my copy of BF3 a couple weeks back.  I just hope the launch is far better than the one BF:BC2 had.

+1.  Activision can continue to feed on the wallets of console players but I feel the rest of the gaming community has had it with their future  "vision" of first person shooters.

I'm really digging this info about laying down suppressing fire on enemy positions which makes their screens blurry and unable to shoot accurate shots.
