My first day at E3 was a mental and physical test. Besides the free energy drinks, the only thing that kept me going off two hours of sleep was the prospect of playing some of the most anticipated titles of 2011 and beyond. During my wandering and line waiting, I was able to get some hands-on time with two marquee titles that will be in direct competition with each other: Battlefield 3 and Modern Warfare 3. Not to my surprise, both titles are fundamentally the same as the titles that preceded them.
Even though Modern Warfare 3 is giving gamers a new mode to toy with, it seems that is all Infinity Ward has given to us. It feels hollow, as though the series has hit a wall creatively, forcing many elements in the process. Rather than create something new or improve something that already works, Infinity Ward is seemingly content to push out what they know. That’s safe. In comparison Battlefield 3 feels like it has enough in it to return to return the franchise back to being the king of first-person shooters.
