there's no rule against them, but its always worth considering the consensuses, for example if everyone does it you can easily double the length of a page meaning more scrolling, also it does slow the page load down, and this can very and add up to 45 seconds per page load if the hosting domain is running slow or has heavy traffic.
but imo there are pointless, and i personally never look at them.

the same can be said for sigs in general not only the stats ones but, the stat ones are created using a script and each time the your stats change it has to redraw the image, and when you consider that the total amount of people that use stat sigs its a lot of work.
