They're pretty even, but the 550ti will do better at high resolutions.  But if you are to connect it to a television, the Nvidia cards tend to handle that task a little better.

AMD uses a bit less power, and should run a bit cooler, if either of those are a factor for you. Sorry, I can't really suggest one over the other.

I'm a fan of the AMD cards, even with though I now have an Intel processor. The 6770 should allow you to connect 3 monitors in Eyefinity mode (at least my old HD5770 did)

Only running one monitor right now. If i did upgrade it would only be to 2 monitors.

I have been an Nvidia fan, but I am thinking about the AMD cards due to the better multi-mon support (like Eyefinity support for 3 mons).  So, it really depends on what you are looking for in the potential future use.  If it is just to have a graphics card, I would tend to lean towards the 550ti, but I would look at the 2gb one over the 1gb one.  If the 2 is not to far off your price point, I would go that route.

If heat and power are concerns, take a look at the newer line from both companies; the 7xxx series from AMD and the 6xx series from Nvidia. With each new line comes smaller transistors, which always results in lower power draw and heat production. For example, my 7970 runs cooler and uses less power than my old 6950, but is twice as powerful.

For performance, the 6770 sits between the 7750 and 7770.

Tazman, if you're looking into running three screens (Eyefinity or Nvidia Surround), look at WSGF.org. By far, the best place for info on running multiple screens. Any game that has no native support for multi-monitor, that community comes up with a fix. There are two guys that make and update fixes for running Black Ops and W@W on three screens properly, for example. On their own, both gamers (well, all COD games) will stretch a single screen image across all three displays. Or if you have wish to harass me about it, feel free.

Checkout out the 550's at NewEgg (<--Click).  BUT, if you can spring the extra $30-ish before rebate (which knocks it down to $119), I would go for this 2 GB version HERE (<--Click)!!!
