A new system might be in my future.

Im not sure where to start. Its been a few years since my last build. Just so you know I am running an e8400 dual core processer, which does not cut it for BF4.

My budget is under $1000 and It is looking like I will need everything except maybe the OS, since I will want my current system for everyday use. This will be a gaming only pc.

I still have a free liscense for Win 7.

I am looking at Toms Hardware $1600 build as a place to start:

Im thinking I can shave off some money with sales here and there.
I will want to double the memory to at least 16gb, and drop the SSD.

I see that Fry's has the ntel Core i5-4670K for $219 right now, so that is a $20 savings right off the bat. And I might just go with a single graphics card.

Looks like a pretty sweet system.  
I found it was best to shop for each component, but you can spend a lot in shipping lol.
I just bought most of mine from Tiger Direct and Newegg.  I think New Egg had bundle deals for the motherboard and CPU.  I recommend the ASUS ROG series.


I just built my first one in Dec.  It was a lot of fun and I learned a lot.

It'd have to suggest avoiding a Seagate drive. they used to be awesome, but i've been seeing a lot of failures over the past few years. Western Digital seems to have stepped up their game though. But the rest looks pretty sweet. I'm a bit on the fence about 16gb of RAM, though. Right now, I could only justify having 16gb of RAM if you run virtual machines or heaving Photoshop work. I have 8gb of 1866mhz and I always have some to spare while gaming, ripping, video encoding.. anything. Plus RAM prices are at a high point right now. Id get 8gb for now,and another 8 when the prices come down in a couple months. RAM prices have always fluctuated greatly. I always suggest a strong single GPU instead of dual cards. Also maybe look at a Blu-rray drive. At least a BD reader/DVD burner.

Looks good.  My only concern is power consumption and the 750 watt PSU.  You might run into some heat issues with one fan in that particular case.  Might want to get some more fans for your case especially if you are doing SLI.

Gonna start tweaking the components. I like NZXT and AZZA cases.
The reason I was going to start with 16 gb of ram is so I can get matched pairs and wont have to worry latter that I can get them or have to replace the entire set.
Since this would be gaming only, any reason to get the blu-ray drive over dvd?

Have you gone to CyberpowerPC or iBuyPower and looked at their systems, which you can have custom built without the OS?  I have bought in the past from both and have had very good luck with them. I don't know if they can do it in the budget you are looking at.

Moosehead, go with the 16g memory.

I bought my son a Cyberpower mini tower. About the size of Xbox 360 and liquid cooled. So far it seems like a nice unit. I eoyukjd just prefer to build my own.

Actually with a little research your proposed PSU should be more than plenty.  It seems that most SLI configurations run on average of just under 500 watts.  Overclocking would bump it up but you should still have enough power.

A good quality 750w PSU will be fine.  Every generation of GPU requires amps,  relative to their performance.

Nice. Going to RAID those drives? I'm a huge fan of big cases, and have a 922 myself. Having room for an entire forearms in there is quite convenient, and the bulge on the 'back' panel has room to snake all your cables around the back of the motherboard. My one tiny beef with it is that you have to remove 4 internal screws to pop the front off to give those filters a good cleaning. I was unable to find a 200mm fan for the side, but was able to make a 220mm fit just fine, and stretch a piece of pantyhose over it.

you can compare and contrast vendors. you can make a free account and put in your zip code and compare local vendors as well.
it helped me a lot.
