Right now i have a 512mb  7600gt, would a 8800gt 256mb be a nice improvement or should i stick with anything over 256mb?

If you already have that card, go with at least the 512MB.  Any 8800 would be good.  The cheapest one i would buy is the 8800GT 512mb.  But i would aim for a 640mb or 768mb.

Look at Newegg.com

95% of all Major video card companies have discontinued the card due to the new 9800 series.
